Orlando Pirates secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, advancing 4-0 on aggregate to book their place in the Wafa Wafa final and pursue a fifth consecutive top-eight crown.
The Soweto giants entered the decisive second leg holding a slim advantage courtesy of a first-leg away win in Polokwane at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, where Deon Hotto netted a first-half strike on the stroke of halftime. The stakes were heightened at the Orlando Amstel Arena following two prior fixtures played within the same week, making familiarity a factor as the teams met for the third and final act of a trilogy. For the hosts, advancing meant moving one step closer to becoming the first team to appear in five consecutive finals in the 55-year history of top-eight competition under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
First-Half Goals Break Open the MTN8 Semifinal
Sekhukhune United weathered early attacking pressure as goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata was called into action early on, producing several crucial saves including an outstanding reflex stop in the 28th minute to turn away Thapelo Mokobodi’s goal-bound header from a corner kick. The resistance finally broke in the 37th minute when Mokobodi arrived late in the box to turn home an excellent assist from the left by Yanela Mbuthuma, breaking the deadlock and putting Pirates 2-0 up on aggregate.
Before the Limpopo outfit could regroup, Mbuthuma turned provider again just two minutes later. Following a sweeping counter-attack led by the running power of Oswin Appollis from a Sekhukhune corner, Mbuthuma fed Ghampani Lungu, who crashed home a powerful drive from just inside the box to double the Buccaneers’ advantage. The Sea Robbers headed into the interval firmly in control with a 2-0 lead on the day and a 3-0 lead on aggregate.
Tactical Adjustments and Disciplined Defense
During the first half, the visitors were lucky not to go down to 10 men midway through the period when left-back D’Angelo Kazeem, already on a yellow card, avoided a second caution for a blatant pull-back on Ghampani Lungu. The defender was substituted a while later to avoid the danger of a red card.
There was still plenty to fight for after the break, with Babina Noko putting up a spirited fight and throwing everything forward in search of a way back into the contest. However, the Buccaneers remained disciplined at the back while continuing to push for more despite their comfortable advantage.
Second-Half Management and Late Gloss
The game appeared to be heading towards a 2-0 finish as the Soweto giants were able to see themselves over the line with relative comfort. However, Kamogelo Sebelebele had the final say, finding the back of the net deep into added time to put the gloss on the victory. The final whistle confirmed a 4-0 aggregate triumph for the Mayfair outfit, booking their place in the Wafa Wafa final.
