Oscar Awards 2022: what happened between Will Smith and Chris Rock | Pineapples at the ceremony?

A strange event occurred at the ceremony of the Oscar Awards 2022. It happened when comedian Chris Rock he made his presentation monologue before presenting an award. The actor made a “joke” about the physical appearance of Jada Pinkett-Smithwife Will Smith: He compared his head without hair (due to alopecia) with that of the protagonist of the GI Jane tape.

Apparently, his partner – nominated for the role of The Williams Method – did not like the apparent joke, went on stage and hit the presenter. The scene was recorded live: there was a deathly silence, as if doubt floated throughout the Dolby Theater as to whether what they had seen was real or staged. But the doubts were cleared when Smith yelled at him twice “Get my wife’s name out of your fucking boca”. Finally, Chris Rock told his colleague that he “was crazy.” “It was just a GI Jane Show joke,” added the comedian, unable to believe what had happened.

Rapper Sean Combs tried to fix the situation on stage, but the scandal was already unstoppable. Host Amy Schumer tried the same thing: “Did I miss something? There’s a slightly different vibe in this place,” she said of the episode that shook Hollywood.

“Crazy dad”

After the scandal, Will Smith was chosen to win the award for Best Leading Actor at the 94th Academy Awards for his role in the film King Richard: A Winning Family, in which he plays Richard Williams, father and coach of tennis sisters Venus and Serena Williams. Smith was the wide favorite to win in this category, after having managed to sweep the awards season, keeping the Golden Globe, the British BAFTA or the actors’ union, among others.

“I know that now I see myself as the crazy dad, as Richard Williams was called, but love makes you do crazy things”he explained, before thanking the Academy and joking about whether they’ll ever invite him again.
