Ostend New Year’s Plunge: A Beloved Tradition and Festive Event in Ostend

2024-01-06 16:12:00

Since its first edition in 1987, the Ostend New Year’s Plunge has gradually become a true tradition on the first Saturday of the year.

After the kick-off given by Mayor Bart Tommelein (Open VLD), the multi-colored crowd ran towards the North Sea to take a dip. “With four thousand ‘polar bears’, we welcome the new year in a fun way, where young and old give the best of themselves,” declared the mayor.

Despite the gloomy weather, the city of Ostend can also rejoice in having had a successful Christmas holiday. Compared to 2023, the number of nights has notably increased by 9%.
