Ottawa condemns U.S. tariff hike on Canadian softwood lumber

Canada’s international trade minister criticized the U.S. Commerce Department for nearly doubling tariffs on cork lumber, calling the move “unfair and unwarranted.”

Minister Mary Wu said the United States has significantly increased tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber from 8.05% to 14.54%.

It’s the latest in a bilateral spat that Ottawa says is hampering efforts to improve housing costs and supply.

Minister Wu said the price hikes would hurt consumers and producers on both sides of the border and called for a lasting solution to the long-standing conflict.

The British Columbia Lumber Trade Council in British Columbia noted that the measure could not have come at a worse time and exacerbates an already difficult situation.

President Kurt Nyquid said in a statement this will impact the province’s manufacturing operations, jobs and communities.
