Health authorities in the state confirmed the detection of three cases of meningitis at the Piedras Negras General Hospital, Therefore, the protocol for the attention of this type of cases was activated, looking to detect the type of bacteria that caused the diseaseand establish a sanitary fence to avoid massive contagion.
The secretary of health in Coahuila, Roberto Bernal, assured that the three people who arrived are under 30 years of age, and two of them presented a problem of drug addiction, in addition to pointing out that they already have the report of the death of one of these three persons.
He added that the other two people who arrived at the Piedras Negras General Hospital with this disease, They remain alive, but in serious condition. The state official explained that the three people were from the municipality of Piedras Negras, and one of them was an inmate of a penitentiary center.
After obtaining information about the patients who arrived with this disease at the Piedras Negras General Hospital, a review was initiated in all the health centers of the region, in order to find out if there were other cases, about which No data was obtained on another person with this same condition.
“Three patients with meningitis arrived at the Piedras Negras General Hospital, the characteristics are similar, less than 30 years of age, a couple of them with addiction to drugs, the serious thing about this is that there may be meningococcal meningitis and there may be an epidemic, mass contagion, and we had the obligation to treat close contacts,” said the health secretary in Coahuila.
Roberto Bernal, affirmed that the studies carried out show that the cultivation of cerebrospinal fluid, not compatible with meningococcus, which would have forced the authorities to establish a sanitary fence with all close contacts, since they could develop meningitis.
“The good news is that it appears that it is not the bacteria, what was initially isolated is not compatible with meningococcusthose samples come from the central laboratory and we are analyzing them here”.
The head of the Ministry of Health, explained that this disease is transmitted by direct or close contact with the nasal secretions.
Roberto Bernal, indicated that once confirm what kind of bacteria is the one that causes this disease, the consequent actions will be taken.
