Security cameras in a residential building in Bogotá remained silent witnesses of a scene that has outraged the entire city. A video, which has quickly gone viral on social media, shows a man unleashing his anger on a defenseless dog inside an elevator.
In the images, the dog can be seen showing obvious signs of fear and submission while its owner repeatedly hits it. The attack, which occurred last Thursday in the Fontibón neighborhood, has generated widespread condemnation in the community.
Local authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the case and are on the trail of the attacker. A formal complaint has been filed and the public has been asked to cooperate in finding the whereabouts of the perpetrator.
What does Colombian law say about animal abuse?
Law 1774 of 2016 establishes severe penalties for those who commit acts of cruelty against animals. Sanctions can include significant fines and even prison sentences. However, despite this legislation, cases of animal abuse remain frequent in Colombia.
