More than 2,23,000 people have reportedly been affected by natural disasters in various provinces of Afghanistan. Earthquakes in Paktika and Khost in June affected more than 85,000 people, while heavy flooding in the southern and eastern parts of the country in July and August affected more than 78,800 people.
This is stated in a report prepared by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Floods have not only affected residential buildings in Afghanistan, but also caused heavy economic losses to the country’s farmers. Many families have lost their houses, property and livestock due to the natural calamity. The worst-affected poor households need urgent humanitarian food assistance, the OCHA report said.
In an earlier report, OCHA pointed out that more than 24 million people in Afghanistan are facing food shortages. The total number of flood-related deaths last year was 147. TOLOnews reported that the death toll has increased by 75 percent this year.
