Overall PC market is “challenging”, says Tim Cook

Just now, Apple announced a drop in 34% in Mac revenue in the last quarter of fiscal 2023, compared to the same period last year. In an interview with CNBCCook said the overall PC market is “challenging.”

Second Luca Masters, Apple’s chief financial officer (CFO), this drop was the result of challenges in the market and comparisons with the previous period. Specifically, in the July 2022 quarter, supply chain disruption led to an increase in Mac sales in September of that year, a pattern that was not repeated in this year.

Additionally, Apple’s decision to launch a new MacBook Air model in June instead of its usual September release date also had a negative impact on sales in the last quarter, compared to the previous year.

Even so, the giant maintains hope for a strong recovery in the performance of Macs during the holiday season, which covers the period between the end of November and the beginning of January. Apple’s CEO expressed optimism:

I anticipate Macs will have a significantly better quarter in December. We’ve got the M3, we’ve got the new product line, and we’re not going to deal with the challenging year-over-year comparisons.

Last Monday, as we covered extensively, the company launched new MacBook Pros and a new iMac powered by the chips M3, M3 Pro e M3 Maxand it expects the sales impact to boost revenue in the current quarter.

In some regions, the new devices are already on pre-sale, with shipments scheduled for next week. The company, according to analysts, guaranteed a good stock of models, alleviating concerns about possible supply limitations.
