Swiss hotel industry almost as strong as before Corona
Most of the guests from Europe and America are back. Travelers from China and Japan are still largely absent.
In 2022, Swiss hotels received almost as many guests as before the pandemic. Compared to the previous year, 2021, which was still weak due to the corona, the number of overnight stays rose by 29 percent to 38.2 million, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday. The pre-pandemic level seems within reach. Only 3.3 percent are missing from the 39.6 million from the record year 2019.
Record among Swiss guests
Swiss tourism professionals benefited from the fact that, as in the pandemic years 2020 and 2021, the Swiss were increasingly staying at home to go on vacation. Compared to 2019, local guests accounted for an increase of 17.5 percent in overnight stays compared to 2019. The domestic demand of 21.1 million means a record value.
But guests from Europe also came back to Switzerland in droves in 2022. The most important foreign market, Germany, was just under 8 percent short of 2019. The Benelux countries were only 3.4 percent missing and France even had 2.8 percent more than in 2019.
Chinese tourists stayed away
Significantly more tourists also came to Switzerland from the USA, the Gulf States and India in 2022. Compared to 2019, the overseas markets are still missing a good 35 percent. This is mainly due to the fact that the majority of guests from China and Japan were still absent as a result of strict corona restrictions. The guests from China were still down 91 percent compared to 2019.
All in all, demand from abroad has already doubled compared to the previous year to 17.2 million overnight stays. After lifting corona restrictions in China, however, there is now hope that more guests will come from China again this year.
