Doctrine Joins the Roster as Season Five Opens
Blizzard launched the fifth season of Overwatch on October 6 under the title A Grim Doctrine, bringing a new support hero and a fresh escort map to the hero shooter. The update concludes the Reign of Talon storyline that ran throughout the previous year. Players will find major reworks to existing characters alongside seasonal Halloween events and newly structured battle pass rewards.
The new hero Doctrine arrives as part of the support category with mechanics distinct from traditional healers. Instead of focusing solely on restoring health to teammates, his abilities manipulate life force to harm enemies and boost allies. He wields an Eternal Scepter for mid- to long-range attacks and healing, supported by small automated drones that increase the attack speed of nearby companions. His Infuse ability adds tactical depth by letting him augment other skills based on the situation. His ultimate ability, Deliverance, grants temporary extra health to allies while reducing the maximum health of affected enemies. Developers adjusted his numbers shortly after launch and trimmed his healing output and ability durations in an October 13 update.
Sombra and Roadhog Receive Major Reworks
Sombra transitions from the damage category to the support roster in this update, marking a fundamental shift in her utility. Her new Hotfix ability allows her to heal teammates while remaining invisible, while Cyberspace creates an area that buffs allies and debuffs enemy damage and healing. Roadhog also sees significant changes.
Volcanic Escort Map and Graveyard Games Event
Watchpoint: Grímsvötn introduces a new escort map, located inside a volcanic prison facility in Iceland that blends ice, fire, and advanced technology. The map serves as the site where Doomfist frees Doctrine from imprisonment, tying the environment directly to the lore of Reign of Talon. Alongside the map, the Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games event runs from October 6 to November 2. This mode grants players random new abilities every time they die, letting them build unusual skill combinations as matches progress. Players can also contribute offerings earned from challenges to vote on which heroes join the temporary roster.
Battle Pass Cosmetics and Solo Leveling Collaboration
The season pass features five legendary Halloween skins for Ashe, Soldier: 76, Mei, Junker Queen, and Zenyatta, plus three epic skins for Bastion, Brigitte, and Symmetra. Lucio receives a mythic-tier weapon named Treblemaker.
