Oysters banned from sale after collective food poisoning

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea concluded the meal. On December 9, while celebrating Sainte-Barbe in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (Loire-Atlantique), around forty people, including around twenty firefighters, were victims of collective food poisoning.

After analysis, it turns out that it was the oysters consumed by the guests which were contaminated by norovirus. Following this giant gastroenteritis, the prefect of Loire-Atlantique issued an order on Friday prohibiting the fishing, collection and sale of oysters from the north of the Bay of Bourgneuf where the incriminated shellfish came from.

A few days before the end-of-year holidays, this decision is a big blow for shellfish farmers established in the sector. To express their dissatisfaction, some of them threw loads of oysters on Saturday morning in front of the town halls of Pornic and Moutiers-en-Retz, reports The Courrier du Pays de Retz.
