Obesity is one of the health problems that threaten the lives of many people, and health experts are always striving to try to find medical solutions that protect people from the “common condition”.
The NHS now offers Ozambik, which suppresses appetite and can help obese patients lose 15 percent of their body weight.
The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, said the drug’s launch in the UK was “limited” due to high global demand.
And the NHS confirmed that 50,000 patients in England may be eligible for treatment.
Tam Fry, chair of the National Obesity Forum, said: “I think it’s great that it’s available now but it has to be under very strict oversight.”
He added that experts had “waited 25 years” for the drug, but warned that the long-term benefits needed further research.
He continued, “The drug can only be prescribed for two years and those who take it following that will need to maintain weight loss. The drug should only be used under supervision.”
This drug was originally developed and used primarily to treat type 2 diabetes, but has subsequently been approved for weight management in obese or overweight adults as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.
