The Estonian conductor and his orchestra from the Tonhalle in Zürich have released a CD celebrating the 75th anniversary of the American composer whose style is as recognizable as it is unclassifiable.

Lake Zurich shimmers under a blinding sun from the terrace of the Tonhalle where, in March 2022, Paavo Järvi joined us. The French are familiar with the man who has led the house orchestra since 2019, since he held the same position at the Orchester de Parisbetween 2010 and 2016. Renowned for its excellence in the classical and romantic repertoire, the symphonic phalanx which was led by guests named Brahms, Wagner, Richard Strauss, Furtwängler, Klemperer and Solti, is far from living in the past. It was reported in 2014 about the world premiere of a coin d’Esa-Pekka Salonen under the baton of Lionel Bringuier whom she had then made her very young musical director. That Järvi succeeded in imposing, on his arrival, works by Messiaen, for his first CD with this orchestra, is therefore not surprising. Nor did he appoint John Adams as composer-in-residence for…
