Pacific Island Nation Nauru Changes Name to Republic of Naoero

The Pacific Island nation of Nauru has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero, according to an announcement by the country’s president. The modification alters the English spelling of the country to match its traditional pronunciation and spelling in the national language.

## Pronunciation and Spelling Alignment

The adjustment brings the official name of the microstate into alignment with how the word is spoken and written by its indigenous population. Nauru, an isolated coral atoll situated northeast of Tuvalu in the Central Pacific, covers just 21 square kilometers (8.1 square miles), making it one of the smallest independent republics in the world.

While international bodies and foreign governments have long used the anglicized spelling “Nauru,” local authorities have moved to formalize the traditional spelling of Naoero. The change affects official state documents, international correspondence, and diplomatic references to the government.

## Diplomatic and Institutional Context

The renaming follows a pattern of Pacific Island nations asserting linguistic and cultural identity in international forums. Territorial designations and country names across the region have occasionally undergone revisions to better reflect native nomenclature, mirroring broader decolonization efforts in geographic naming conventions.

The government has not yet released a comprehensive timeline detailing how quickly international partners, mapping agencies, and the United Nations are expected to update their registries to reflect the new spelling, leaving the administrative rollout of the name change to proceed through standard diplomatic channels.
