Pacific Ocean Expedition Discovers Dozens of New Deep-Sea Species

In a major marine biology discovery, scientific expeditions targeting the deep Pacific have recovered dozens of new species, including 48 distinct species among 55 specimens retrieved from the abyssal plains of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, alongside 20 species new to science found within deep reefs off Guam using autonomous monitoring structures.

Mapping the Abyssal Biodiversity of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone

The deep ocean continues to yield organisms entirely unknown to science, forcing marine biologists to race against potential industrial threats. According to research published in the journal Zookeys, scientists exploring the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) recovered 55 megafauna specimens using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Out of those 55 specimens, 48 turned out to be completely different species. Dr. Guadalupe Bribiesca-Contreras noted the significance of physical retrieval over seabed imaging.

Merit Researcher Dr. Adrian Glover, who leads the Museum’s Deep Sea Research Group, emphasized the scale of the hidden biodiversity. ‘We know that small millimetre-sized animals called macrofauna are extremely biodiverse in the abyss,’ Glover stated.

The Industrial Pressure on the Deep Seafloor

The CCZ covers over five million square kilometres in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Mexico, plunging to depths of around 5,500 metres. While remote, this vast plain has drawn international attention due to extensive deposits of polymetallic nodules. These potato-sized mineral lumps are rich in critical metals like cobalt, nickel, manganese, and copper, which serve as foundational components for net-zero energy technologies such as electric cars and wind turbines.

Proponents of seabed mining argue that harvesting these nodules will pave the way for a green revolution without impacting land-based ecosystems. Conversely, opponents warn that extraction could devastate the oceans by causing irreparable damage to seafloor ecosystems. Research expeditions like those funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with leadership from Prof. Emeritus Craig Smith of the University of Hawaii, aim to establish baseline data in protected Areas of Particular Environmental Interest (APEIs) before commercial operations scale up.

Twilight Zone Discoveries Near Guam

Beyond the abyssal plains, shallow and mid-depth ecosystems are also revealing hidden biodiversity. Expeditions conducted by the California Academy of Sciences have retrieved Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) deployed off the coast of Guam. These stackable PVC plate devices act as artificial reef “hotels,” collecting colonizing organisms over multi-year deployments.

Luiz Rocha of the California Academy of Sciences described the experience of retrieving structures left underwater since 2018.

The Guam deployment yielded 2,000 specimens, identifying 100 species never previously recorded in the region and at least 20 species entirely new to science. Among the finds were a transparent goby fish with a visible skeleton, a yellow-spotted sea slug from the genus Marionia, a baby octopus marked with distinct polka dots, and an orange cardinalfish suspected to belong to the genus Apogonichthyoides.

Future Outlook for Deep-Sea Protections

Temperature sensors embedded within the ARMS units have additionally confirmed that ocean warming trends are penetrating the twilight zone between 55 and 100 metres depth. As researchers continue retrieving long-term monitoring devices across the Pacific, the data underscores a critical reality: the baseline cataloging of marine ecosystems remains largely incomplete, even as external pressures from climate change and commercial extraction accelerate.
