Packers Claim Rookie Edge Rusher Arden Walker Off Waivers from Vikings

The Green Bay Packers have added depth to their defensive line by claiming rookie edge rusher Arden Walker off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, according to the official NFL transaction wire. The transaction, processed on Tuesday, brings the undrafted defensive end onto Green Bay’s training camp roster just as the team approaches the midpoint of the NFL preseason.

Minnesota had waived Walker a day earlier on Monday to create roster space for veteran outside linebacker Kenny Dyson.

During his five-year collegiate career, Walker recorded 102 combined tackles, including 14 tackles for loss, across 51 games. He played his first two seasons at Missouri before transferring to Colorado, where he spent three seasons playing under high-profile head coach Deion Sanders. In addition to his tackle numbers, Walker accumulated eight sacks, one pass defense, and one forced fumble during his time in college.

Pre-Draft Metrics and Roster Competition

Although Walker went unselected in the NFL draft after a college career that did not generate heavy national media attention, he drew positive reviews during pre-draft workouts for his testing numbers. During his spring pro day workouts, he clocked a 4.76-second 40-yard dash, posted a 31-inch vertical leap, recorded a 9-foot-6 broad jump, and completed 22 bench press reps, alongside a 4.40-second shuttle and a 7.20-second three-cone drill.

Writing about his profile in April, Denver Sports Media analyst Carlos Bryant noted that while those figures did not stand out as absolute freak-show metrics, they were solid across the board and fit the profile of a player trying to show teams he could help in multiple ways. Bryant added that Walker’s broader appeal centered on his “full package — production, leadership, versatility, special teams value and a mindset built around details.”

In Green Bay, Walker joins a crowded edge-rushing room as the franchise evaluates its options for the upcoming campaign. Prior to claiming Walker off waivers, the Packers’ training camp roster listed eight other edge defenders: Micah Parsons, Brenton Cox Jr., Dani Dennis-Sutton, Nyjalik Kelly, Arron Mosby, Collin Oliver, Barryn Sorrell, and Lukas Van Ness. While the team does not formally distinguish between defensive ends and outside linebackers on its official depth chart, Walker will face an immediate battle for snaps and a secure spot over the final stretch of August.

Next Steps Before Roster Cuts

The timing of the waiver claim leaves Walker with a tight window to make an impression on the coaching staff. NFL clubs must trim their active rosters down to 53 players within 12 days, placing immense pressure on late-arrival waiver claims to learn defensive coordinator schemes quickly.
