The Caribbean Islands are a wonderful travel destination. But whether you’re going on a cruise or staying on land, it’s important to think about what clothes you’ll pack in your suitcase before you travel. If you have the “wrong” clothes with you, you could even end up in prison.

In a number of countries, wearing dresses with camouflage colors or
-patterns for civilians are strictly prohibited. This type of clothing is associated with rebels or terrorist organizations. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) warns against “wearing military-like clothing – including children” when traveling to Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

The FDFA does not publish any specific travel advice for Antigua and Barbuda, but as the “Travelbook” portal writes, a military look is not welcome there either. Wearing camouflage clothing could be punished with a fine of 2,000 dollars (the equivalent of around 1,830 francs) – in the worst case, you could even face a year in prison.

Camouflage clothing can be dangerous, and not just in the Caribbean

According to the EDA, the dresses are not banned in Jamaica, the Bahamas, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Grenada – but tourists are advised that the local population often sees people in camouflage clothing confused with the military.

It is not only in the Caribbean that wearing camouflage clothing is punishable, writes “Focus”. Wearing military-pattern clothing is also prohibited in Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, South Africa, the Philippines, Oman, Nigeria and Ghana. It could also happen that the clothing items are confiscated upon entry.
