Pakistan has accused Iran of killing two children in an airstrike on its territory. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that it had summoned the Iranian representative in Islamabad because of an “unprovoked violation” of its airspace. “Violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty is completely unacceptable and may have serious consequences,” the ministry said.

According to the information, two children were killed and three girls were injured in the air strike. The State Department did not provide any information about where the attack occurred. However, users on online platforms reported explosions in the western Pakistani province of Balochistan, which has a border with Iran that is almost a thousand kilometers long. The Pakistani media was talking about the provincial town of Panjgur.

There was initially no reaction from the Iranian side to the allegations. However, the Iranian state news agency Nour News later reported on the online service X, formerly Twitter, that the attack had targeted two important headquarters of the Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl in the neighboring country. These were destroyed “by missiles and drones”.

Jaish al-Adl was founded in 2012 by former members of a radical Sunni movement. In recent years, the group has carried out several attacks in Iran, where it is classified as a terrorist organization. In December, the group claimed responsibility for an attack that left eleven dead on the police headquarters in the city of Rask in southeastern Iran.

Pakistan and Iran repeatedly accuse each other of allowing extremists to carry out attacks on the other country from their territory. However, it is rare for both sides to officially comment on this.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Iran’s “illegal act” was particularly disturbing because there were “multiple channels of communication” between the two countries. “Pakistan has always said that terrorism is a common threat to all countries in the region, which requires coordinated action,” the ministry added. “Unilateral actions such as these are not consistent with good neighborly relations and can seriously undermine bilateral trust,” it said.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards recently attacked targets in Iraq and Syria. According to Iran’s state news agency Irna, the Revolutionary Guards destroyed a “spy headquarters” of the Israeli secret service Mossad on the outskirts of Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region in Iraq. In addition, rockets were fired at meeting places of commanders of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia in Syria.
