Pakistan repealed the British-era Sedition Act

Lahore: Pakistan has repealed the British Sedition Act. The judgment was passed by the Lahore High Court. Justice Shahid Karim quashed the charge of sedition under Section 124A of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The action was taken on a petition filed by a person named Haroon Farooq demanding the repeal of the section.

He pointed out in the petition that this law was first drafted by Thomas Macaulay. It was later removed in 1860 when the Indian Penal Code was enacted. But in 1870 this section was again added by amending the IPC. He also said that such strict laws were made to suppress the voice of dissent at that time.

The Lahore High Court struck down the law. The court stated that this violates the fundamental rights of citizens under the Constitution. The petition also said that freedom of expression and criticism is being used as a weapon to suppress opposing voices.

Speaking about the misuse of Section 124A, the petitioner stated that cases under Section 124A have been registered against many politicians, journalists and activists in the last few years.
