PALE MALE feat. RYDELL – „Detours“ – mica

The duo PALE MALE and RYDELL penetrate deep into the world of indie neo soul in an impressively diverse way on their EP “Detours” (Pale Male Records; release July 14).

Two have joined forces who simply complement each other musically very well. On the one hand there is the Viennese musician Paul Male, also known as Pale Male, who creates an extremely easy-going mix of jazz, hip-hop, funk and pop with his band and quartet and also distinguishes himself as an excellent songwriter and producer. On the other hand, we have American singer and actress Kimberly Rydell, aka Kimberly Rydell Rydellwho, with her incredibly soulful voice, is able to transform every song into a touching and rousing musical experience in the most beautiful way.

What the two present on “Detours” are songs that each tell their own compelling deep stories. The stylistic ingredients are always the same – jazz, funk, soul, RnB, hip-hop, indie pop – but it’s amazing how varied the two process these influences in their pieces and what range of emotions they cover. Their ability to create moods and translate them into layered arrangements and catchy melodies is impressive. Musically, the EP moves between a pleasant, positive feeling (“Friendly Like Mine”), a melancholic tone (“Detour”) and pure tonal elegance (“How It Goes”).

Unfortunately, for the time being there are only five pieces that you get to hear. Nevertheless, these already clearly show the high musical quality in the collaboration between Pale Male and Rydell plugged. It is to be hoped that the two will not see “Detours” as a one-off affair, but will continue to work together in the future.
