PALERMO, Italy — Russia’s Daria Kasatkina had to work harder than expected at times at Tuesday’s Palermo Open, but still defeated crowd favorite Martina Trevisan in straight sets 6-3, 6- 7 (2) and 6-0 in the first round.
After losing the second set, the tournament favorite only conceded seven points to her opponent in the final round. She will now cross swords with compatriot Tatian Prozorova, who edged Uzbek Nigina Abduraimova 6-3, 6-4.
Egypt’s Mayar Sherif came from behind to defeat Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 3-6, 7-6(6), 7-5.
Sherif will now face Russian Sofya Lansere, who is still in contention despite a qualifying loss. She earned a ticket to the main draw after Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini withdrew _ due to a shoulder injury _ ahead of her first-round match against Serbia’s Olga Danilovic. The latter, however, had to give up against Lansere herself due to injury, after losing the first set 6-3.
American Emma Navarro also advanced to the second round with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Dutchman Eva Vedder.
Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto for her part lost to Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo in three sets of 6-3, 4-6 and 6-0, while her compatriot Lucia Bronzetti also lost, this time 4- 6, 6-0 and 6-2 against the Russian Erika Andreeva.
Jasmine Paolini of Italy moved on to the next step as she beat Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Cristina Bucsa, Dayana Yastremska and Camila Osorio will also continue their journey on the red clay of the Country Time club.
