Palestinian journalist Amal Mohammed Shamali, a correspondent for Qatar Radio, was killed Monday in an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to reports from Palestinian media outlets and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS).
Shamali, 46, also contributed to several Arab and local media organizations, the PJS stated, and continued her reporting “despite the ongoing assault and war on the Gaza Strip.” Her death brings the total number of journalists and media workers killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to over 270, according to the PJS.
The PJS described the period as “one of the bloodiest for journalists in modern history,” attributing the high death toll to what it called the “deliberate targeting of Palestinian journalism in an attempt to silence the voice of truth and prevent the documentation of the crimes and violations committed against the Palestinian people.”
Gaza’s Government Media Office issued a statement strongly condemning the killing as a “systematic targeting” by Israeli forces. The office further placed responsibility for the incident on the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, accusing them of participating in a “crime of genocide.” It called for international condemnation and accountability for Israel’s actions.
According to a tally by Shireen.ps, a monitoring website named for Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who was killed in the West Bank in 2022, approximately 13 journalists have been killed each month during the more than two years of conflict. At least ten of those killed were working for Al Jazeera, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported earlier this year that Palestine was the deadliest place for journalists to work in 2025, with the Middle East being the most dangerous region accounting for 74 deaths – more than half of the 128 journalists and media workers killed globally.
As of Monday, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported 72,133 Palestinians have been killed and 171,805 injured since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023. The Hamas-led attacks on Israel on that date resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,139 people in Israel. Since the implementation of a US- and Qatar-brokered ceasefire in October, at least 640 Palestinians have been killed and 1,700 wounded, according to the Ministry of Health.
Aid deliveries continued Monday, with convoy number 152 entering Gaza through the Rafah crossing, carrying approximately 3,680 tons of supplies. However, the World Health Organization has warned that medicine and medical supply stocks in Gaza are critically low, threatening the operation of remaining hospitals.
