In recent years, many Japanese companies have abandoned their production lines in China and moved their production back to Japan. Panasonic recently announced the reduction of its air-conditioner production lines in China, while investing in expanding production in Japan to reduce geopolitical risks.

Panasonic’s changes this time are mainly aimed at mid-to-high-end energy-saving air conditioners sold in Japan. Its production line will be moved from Guangzhou, China to the Kusatsu factory in Shiga Prefecture. In order to increase production, Panasonic plans to spend 10 billion yen to expand local production lines. Panasonic explained that the plan is to meet domestic demand for these products in Japan and to take into account geopolitical risks.

The production line relocation plan is expected to be completed next year, after which it will be able to reduce the cost of warehousing and reduce the time required for delivery by 25%. The Kusatsu factory will also recruit about 20% more manpower. Panasonic said that it is still convinced that there is sufficient competitiveness for moving the production line to Japan.
