Consideration for safety as an in-vehicle display

Kazumasa Nagashima, Manager, PM Section, Product Department, HMI Systems Division, Display Business Unit, explained the actual development. This in-vehicle display was developed together with Toyota Auto Body, and as there were changes in specifications such as going from 26 inches to 48 inches, a development method called CCPM (Critical Chain Project Management) was adopted. The company says it was able to shorten the functional implementation and evaluation period by 2.5 months (18%) from 14.5 months to 12 months.

For the display, we pursue the largest pillar-to-pillar size. Since the main focus is on 16:9 source display, it is a 48-inch 32:9 system with two 26-inch full HD displays connected side by side. Of course, it is desirable to use full HD in LCD panel manufacturing, and the size seems to have been determined from that perspective.

The die-cast part of the display mounting part of the 48-inch display unit on display The split structure on the back of the display. It is designed to bend towards you from the center in case of an emergency.

We reduced the frame size by 42% to achieve the maximum screen size for in-vehicle use. Specifically, we changed the backlight bezel to a strong part like die-casting, and succeeded in reducing the size from about 72mm to about 42mm.

Additionally, since this 48-inch display is installed in a car, it is designed to handle vibrations and side collisions. To deal with vibration, we perform vibration analysis and implement maintenance that corresponds to that vibration. The side collision response system is designed to fold forward in the event of an input from the side, which is said to be a safety consideration for guests sitting in the rear seats.

If you actually look at the back of the display, you can see a dividing line on the die-cast frame. In the event of a side collision, the structure bends forward in a V-shape from this point, making it difficult for protrusions such as the liquid crystal display to protrude toward the rear seats.

Looking at the back, you can see the die-cast mounting parts, and the whole unit weighs about 15kg.

According to Mr. Nagashima, the development came from a request from Lexus to install the world’s largest LCD display in the rear seat. In response to this demand, we received an order for a 26-inch x 2 48-inch display in 2021. It was developed and officially announced in 2023.
