Panathinaikos – Olympiacos 77-71: See phases
The race
With Kostas Sloukas (10 points, 2 triples) scoring 5 decisive points in the final – with a “big” three-pointer and two accurate shots – Panathinaikos defeated Olympiakos 77-71 in the 3rd match of the Top 6 and effectively secured first in the regular season of the Basket League.
In an amazing derby of the “eternals” where… bodies fell, the “greens” (despite the absences of Grant and Antetokounmpo) found the solutions at the end to reach victory, having Mitoglou and Nan on a great night. Olympiacos, with an impressive Williams-Goss (18 points), “came back” from -17 (34-17), but despite its dominance in rebounds (38-27), it paid for its many mistakes (14-6 ) and experienced his third defeat this year against Panathinaikos in the championship.
The quarters: 23-16 38-33, 59-55, 77-71
The two teams started hand in hand in the score, with very nice collaborations and inventions. Panathinaikos had Slukas in an excellent situation creatively, as he constantly “fed” Hernangometh and Mitoglou at the beginning of the match.
Ergin Ataman’s choice to start the derby with Mitoglou at ‘5’ and the Spaniard at ‘4’ gave the Greens’ attack good options as Fal could not follow the Greek power forward far.
After the 9-11 from Kanaan’s three-pointer with which Olympiacos overtook, Panathinaikos began to slowly but surely build a small lead that brought it to +7 (23-16) at the end of the first period thanks to the three-pointers of Slouka and Grigonis.
In the second period, Panathinaikos started to step on… gas. With a very effective defense that led to a series of mistakes by the Olympiakos attack, but also to steals by Sluka, Hernangometh and Lessor, the “greens” ran a 19-1 run, reaching the difference from 15-16 to 34- 17 in 14′.
The entrance of Williams-Goss “housed” the game of Olympiakos, who from the middle of the second period began to find solutions in the attack and “nibble” the difference. Kanaan’s three-pointer at 38” before halftime gave Piraeus the opportunity to reduce to 38-31, while Fal with an impressive nailing at 4” reduced the difference to 5 (38-33).
Olympiacos continued its counterattack in the third period by dominating the rebounds, got many points from second attacks with Peters and Kanaan and in the 26th minute it was ahead with 47-48. The “greens” improved their percentages and with a spike and a foul by Lessor and a basket by Papapetrou, they regained a lead of 6 points (59-53).
In the last period, the match became… grand guinol. Olympiacos reduced with Williams-Goss, while a foul whistled to Sluka on Peters at the end of the attack of the “red and whites” brought the … explosion of Ataman and together with the technical penalty. The derby continued to go possession by possession, with Panathinaikos getting a “big” three-pointer from Nan in the 34th minute (his first of the game) that brought him to +4 (65-61).
Olympiacos, with Williams-Goss’ layup and Lorentzaki’s three-pointer from McKissick’s steal over Grigonis, brought the derby back to absolute balance (68-68) three minutes before the final. At that point there was a stop because there was a problem with the main timer which broke and had to be replaced, with both teams returning after about 15 minutes and having done a little ‘warm up’ first.
After the break, Panathinaikos got two points from Grigonis’ shots, with Olympiakos then falling for his 14th mistake (fal’s miscommunication with Larentzakis) and Nan then finding an open lane to make the 72- 68.
