Quantities of minced meat once again sparked panic in a city in Egypt, after residents discovered that it was made from egg cartons.
The health administration in Dekrence city in Dakahlia governorate said that it had received complaints from citizens confirming that a car sold minced cardboard inside colored packages as meat in one of the city’s main streets.

She added that a campaign from the Directorate of Health went to the location of the complaint and had already seized frozen meat of doubtful suitability for human consumption, and also seized other meat that had changed in its natural properties, and accordingly all products were seized according to seizure reports.
She indicated that the quantity in a total of 267 kilograms was confiscated, waxed with red wax, and samples were taken from it to be sent for examination in the Ministry of Health laboratories to determine their suitability for human use.

A similar incident terrified the Egyptians last April, after a video clip broadcast by YouTuber appeared on his account on the communication sites, in which he revealed a method used by some restaurants to make “hawawshi” from paper egg cartons, and provide them with special mixture and flavors to give them the taste of real meat for hawawshi.
The clip revealed that some people mince egg cartons after soaking them in a red dye, then add spices to them in order to sell them at cheap prices.
Dr. Sherine Ali Zaki, the representative of the General Syndicate of Veterinarians and head of the Syndicate’s Food Safety Committee, had previously warned Al-Arabiya.net against circulating that hawawshi, stressing that egg cartons are made from chemicals that carry health risks when ingested.
She said that real meat cannot have its color or taste in this way after being “mixed”, warning of minced meat full of fat, viscera and leather, stressing that egg cartons are full of dust and egg residue and interact with bread to become a toxic mixture.
