Fran Navarro 29′, Daniel Pontense (54′) and Youssef El Kaabi (83′, 90′) the goals for Jose Luis Mendilibar’s team, Kirill Despodov had temporarily equalized in 39′ for Razvan Lucescu’s.
The first good moment came in the 7th minute for the hosts, with Tomas Murg winning the counter and shooting with his right from outside the area, but the ball went past the right post of Alexandros Paschalakis’ goal.
Ten minutes later, from Andre Horta’s effort, Navarro “stung” the ball but Dominik Kotarski was on hand. Clearly a better moment for Olympiakos in the 19th minute, with Kostas Fortounis with the ball at his feet at the height of the penalty, after a mistake by Sualio Meite, but he missed with the left.
As time passed, the “red and whites” stepped on the field better and found the net in the 29th minute. A quick free kick from Fortunis, Podense found Chiquinho vertically who took the first shot with Kotarski not blocking firmly and Navarro on the rebound to make it 0-1.
The Thessalonians looked for the immediate answer. And if Joan Sastre, under pressure in the 35th minute, missed the diagonal shot he attempted, two minutes later it was 1-1.
Yannis Constantelias was robbed in midfield by Rodinei – the visitors were fouled – Francisco Ortega caught Murg but the ball was laid to Despontov who coolly slotted past Paschalakis for the equaliser.
The half ended with Murgh’s great, but misguided, inspiration to make a high-hanging spot-kick into Paschalakis’ unguarded corner, after Abdul Rahman Baba’s run and pass. In the second half, after a mediocre first quarter, Olympiacos took the lead again.
Pontense won a free-kick from Sastre, quickly played it up with Ortega, with the Portuguese winger unleashing a thunderous right-footed volley into Kotarski’s left-hand post that was deflected in vain.
Again the “black and white” looked for a quick equalizer and came close to it in the 59th minute. From deep balls by Baba, Ortega and Magomed Ozdoev claimed the ball in the air, it was laid to the unguarded Despodov who missed.
Lucescu tried to improve the image of his team with the changes. The double effort of Brandon Thomas found bodies while in the 71st minute Ozdoev’s header was ready for Paschalakis in the center of his goal. The former goalkeeper was solid and gave his teammates an impetus to “hit” on the counter-attacks.
And the 1-3 came in the 84th minute, with Pontense making the turn, Konstantinos Koulierakis not finding the ball and El Kaabi, who had just entered the match, “executing” Kotarski with his left.
PAOK did not give up. Excellent energy and pass by Konstantelias to Despontov, but Paschalakis neutralized Voulgaros’ shot with a bounce in the 86th minute.
The triumph of Olympiakos was completed in the 90th minute. Cicinho found Podense in the area, Kotarski stopped the Portuguese’s shot with his body, but the ball went to El Kaabi with the Moroccan scoring his second personal goal for the 1-4 final.
The Piraeus, with Medilibar making an ideal debut in the Super League, took “revenge” for the 2-4 in the first round, ended PAOK’s 12-match unbeaten streak and, at the same time, set fire to the championship, as four teams are within five points: AEK 52, PAOK and Panathinaikos 51, Olympiacos 47.
