Characterizing as “suicidal” the possible scenarios that speak of a motion of censure against Stefanos Kasselakis, the SYRIZA MP, Petros Pappas, pointed out that the president’s questionnaire is “advisory”.
Speaking to ERTNews and the “Connections” show, the member of parliament described a lot of… dust that exists and exaggerated the reaction of SYRIZA executives on the occasion of the disputed questionnaire, which was made public by the party’s president, Stefanos Kasselakis. He described it as problematic that the top bodies of the party are meeting for this instead of the problems of society.
“What happened is: the president of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance addressed a questionnaire, mainly advisory, to the members of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, with questions that we all discuss every day, for many years in SYRIZA” he said, recalling that already Alexis Tsipras in 2019 had spoken about the need to expand SYRIZA towards the Center and how SYRIZA changed its name three years ago, adding the Progressive Alliance to its name.
“Leaving the leadership of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras said that SYRIZA has closed its historical cycle and a new SYRIZA must emerge in order to respond to the needs of society and increase our percentages. Given these circumstances, the President raised the questions we all discuss with each other every day. I think that a lot of dust was raised and an excessive reaction was caused by the SYRIZA executives” he underlined and referred to the president’s remark that the Political Secretariat should meet on current issues, as today is a very difficult day for the government.
“The farmers descend on the center of Athens. Perhaps the discussion should revolve around agro-livestock, around accuracy, which continues to “gallop”, around the problem of the roof, around the problems of everyday life and not only that. Introversion is not producing any result for SYRIZA at the moment and I think that it should be taken a step back”, he emphasized, adding that the questionnaire that even concerns the characteristics of SYRIZA’s physiognomy will act as an advisory and “does not abolish the organs, does not abolish the coordinated course of SYRIZA towards the conference”.
Answering a question about the reactions that have been created, he said that what should probably concern everyone in SYRIZA is, in principle, the image of the center-left in the country, which is in a state of flux. “The percentages of SYRIZA, which for many months have been fixed, but for years have been on a downward trend, and the two electoral defeats, which we have suffered… This is the reflection that we must have and even bigger how it will be matched SYRIZA to the needs of society and to the needs of the society of 2024. This is the discussion that needs to be had and I think that anything other than that does not work positively. I call on my comrades with one accord, with prudence and caution to march to Thursday’s conference,” he noted.
When asked about what is attributed to Stefanos Kasselakis that his actions show a party that is biased, he emphasized that the exact opposite is happening and that the bodies have been convened more times than they had been convened in previous years and that the president addresses the grassroots and invites them to decide together . He said that he already voted and that the questions are critical and exactly express the need for the change of SYRIZA.
“We are a party, which by statute says that we start from the Left and reach the progressive center. So we are a centre-left party. I think anyone who denies this doesn’t see reality. We have the characteristics of a left-wing party, but since a center-right front with the political dominance of the ND has been formed in front of us, I think that what the opposing pole in Greece should do is to rally and propose an alternative proposal to these policies ” write down.
Answering a question about whether Stefanos Kasselakis’ goal is to remove all the old executives from the party, he countered that he wants to use all those executives who want and can work for the new era, while regarding whether the radical change, which he seeks, has the support of Mr. Tsipras, he said that he considers it a given since as former President he is the guarantor of the unity of SYRIZA, but that what is important is a majority support from Greek society.
Mr. Pappas reiterated that no decisions have been made about the personality of the party, that the bodies will meet for these characteristics and that the results from the questionnaire will be used over time, not immediately.
In closing, he spoke about the possibility of postponing the conference and explained that since it has been announced, it cannot be postponed, while he characterized the possible scenarios of impeachment against Kasselakis as “suicidal, if they exist”. “I think that among the SYRIZA executives, who have given their lives to this party, (someone) is not in the mood to kill themselves and question the elected president of SYRIZA. For what, for a questionnaire?’ concluded.
