Cleveland Grover Meredith Jr., a Georgia man pardoned by Donald Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, was arrested Monday on new federal charges accusing him of threatening to execute the judges overseeing cases related to the insurrection.

Meredith Faces New Charges After Prior Prison Term
Meredith, 58, previously served 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to making interstate threats against then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Following the January 6 riot, authorities discovered he had traveled to Washington, D.C., with a cache of weapons, including a 9mm semi-automatic firearm, an assault-style rifle with a telescopic sight, and approximately 2,500 rounds of ammunition. During that time, he sent a text message to a relative stating his intent to:

Pardon Covers Former Car Wash Owner Meredith
Before his involvement in the January 6 riot, Meredith operated Car Nutz, an Atlanta-area car wash. The business gained public attention in 2018 when it displayed a billboard linking itself to the QAnon conspiracy theory. When questioned about the sign, Meredith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, We all support freedom and independent thought.
On January 20, 2025, the day Donald Trump returned to office, he issued a mass executive clemency order that included a pardon for Meredith, covering nearly 1,600 individuals charged or convicted in connection with the Capitol attack. Legal records indicate that Meredith’s behavior remained a concern for federal authorities. According to a criminal complaint filed by the FBI, Meredith has continued to use social media to post violent rhetoric. FBI Special Agent Richard Taylor, who is part of the bureau’s Atlanta Division Domestic Terrorism Squad, noted in the affidavit that agents had interviewed Meredith twice before the current charges—once on November 12, 2024, and again on August 14, 2025—regarding previous concerning online posts.

FBI Investigation in Canton, Georgia
The latest investigation began after the National Threat Operations Center received a tip regarding the April Facebook post. Investigators used records from Meta, Google, and T-Mobile to link the account to Meredith’s phone number, email, and internet activity at his residence in Canton, Georgia. The affidavit confirmed that data from Google showed the account’s email was accessed the night of the post from a device in that area.
Prosecutors argue the threat was directed at public officials in Washington, D.C., and constitutes a violation of federal interstate communications law.

Threats Against 10 Federal Judges
The government further alleged that Meredith posted a list of the names of 10 federal judges who had previously ruled against Trump or other January 6 defendants, warning that the Secretary of Defense “has plans 4U.” In other online activity, Meredith described himself as a J6NUMBER1 Winner of the J6 Challenge
and publicly asked Trump to appoint him as Head EXECUTIONER.
U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Elizabeth McBath has scheduled a hearing for November 5 to determine if Meredith will remain in custody while awaiting trial. The case is being overseen by the office of Theodore Hertzberg, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. The motion for detention was granted by a magistrate judge, who found probable cause to believe Meredith violated 18 U.S. Code Section 875(c), which prohibits transmitting threats in interstate commerce. During a July 2025 interview regarding a separate threat made to an unnamed individual, Meredith acknowledged making the statements but denied they were threatening in nature.

The prosecution of Meredith comes during a pattern of post-pardon legal issues. According to an analysis by Lawfare, nearly 100 individuals pardoned for their conduct related to the January 6 riot have faced subsequent arrests or charges for other crimes. When announcing his pardons in 2025, Trump expressed sympathy for the defendants, stating, The judges have been absolutely brutal. The prosecutors have been brutal. And nobody’s ever treated people in this country like that.
