The day after Team USA’s defeat in the small final of the Basketball World Cup, The Athletic reveals that LeBron James is ready to participate in the Paris Olympic Games in 2024, and that the other American superstars are ready to follow him.
In Paris, in less than a year, Team USA will defend its Olympic title, and it will not come to make up the numbers! According to The Athletic, the United States team could resemble a new “dream team”, with only superstars. While the Americans were beaten by Canada on Sunday in the small final of the World Cup, with young players experiencing their very first international competition (Edwards, Reaves, Halliburton, Banchero…), the 2024 team should be totally different. Several sources have in fact indicated to The Athletic that LeBron James, who will then be 39 years old, has said he is ready to participate in the next Olympics and that he has already contacted other players, who would be ready to come to France next year: Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum and Draymond Green, just that! Devin Booker, Damian Lillard, De’Aaron Fox and Kyrie Irving were not called by LeBron James but would also be interested in playing in the Olympic tournament. On paper, this team seems totally unplayable, and we are not yet talking about the possibility of seeing Joel Embiid wear the United States jersey, he who has an American passport in addition to French and Cameroonian passports…
A “last dance” for LeBron and KD?
LeBron James has not worn the United States jersey since the final won at the London 2012 Olympic Games and would consider Paris 2024 ase “one last dance”, like Kevin Durant (36 years old in 2024), decisive in winning the Olympic title in 2021 in Tokyo against France. Stephen Curry (also 36 years old in 2024), major player of the 21st century in the NBA, has never played in an Olympics (on the other hand, he was crowned world champion in 2010 or 2014), by choice or due to ‘a wound.
