Paris: parking becomes chargeable for removals

You plan to to move out? You had anticipated the cost of renting a 3.5 tonne vehicle as well as that of the movers. You will now have to think about paying for your parking. It is indeed the end of free parking during a move, whether for professionals or for individuals. From now on, the Temporary Occupation Authorization, AOT, issued by the services of the City of Paris, becomes payable.

The AOT was already compulsory for moves giving rise to parking outside the paid parking strip, on bus lanes, delivery areas or even sidewalks for example, but it was free so far. It was also necessary to park for more than six consecutive hours in the same parking space or to use a furniture lift. A fee is therefore mandatory but it does not guarantee the reservation of a location.

The AOT would however present more advantageous rates than those applied to the parking meter, according to the City of Paris. They vary according to the size of the vehicle, the use or not of a furniture lift, the duration of parking as well as according to the place where the vehicle is parked. A driver of a light vehicle will thus have to pay €17 for half a day (0h-12h or 12h01-23h59) in the parking strip (€27 for a day) and €25 for a half-day outside the parking strip (40 € for a day).

The town hall assures thatthe rates applied to removal professionals correspond to a maximum of 20% of the actual cost of occupying the place.Since the summer of 2019, a new parking package has already applied to moving professionals in the capital. They pay a flat rate for half a day or a day instead of paying by the hour of parking at the parking meter.

Redistribute space

But why does parking become chargeable when moving house? The City of Paris responds: “During the consultation carried out during the States General of Parking, a very strong request was expressed to redistribute the space dedicated to parking to allow other uses (new mobility, facilities, greening, etc.), uses for all, other than a large open-air car park. These guidelines have naturally led to the consideration that occupations, even temporary and non-commercial, which constitute a form of privatization of public space, should also be subject to pricing.Paris is not the first city to set up this fee. Municipalities have done it like Meudon, Colombes (92) or even Marseille (13) and Lyon (69).

On the other hand, what does not change is that you must submit your request for AOT at least 15 days before the scheduled date. In the event of non-payment, the user is liable to a post-parking fee of €225 for the 1st to 11th arrondissements and €150 from the 12th to the 20th arrondissement, in the paid parking strip and to a request for removal for impoundment outside the parking strip.
