Paris-Roubaix: Dylan van Baarle triumphs as a soloist in the cobblestone classic – Van Aert second

In the sprint of the chasing group, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) had the fastest legs and secured second place (+1:47 minutes). There had been some guesswork about the form of the Belgian champion in the run-up to his corona infection, which is why his team initially assigned him as a helper.

Third place went to the Swiss Stefan Küng from the Groupama-FDJ team. Fourth went to van Aert’s compatriot Tom Devriendt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux).

Slovenian champion Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), who was in the top group for a long time and attacked again after a defect, took fifth place. However, the courage of the Sanremo winner was not rewarded on Easter Sunday.

Paris-Roubaix: Van der Poel and van Aert surprised by wind edge

Due to a hectic start to the race, in which there was a wind edge situation surprisingly early on, in which numerous favorites fell behind and the 119th edition of the cobblestone classic was the fastest in history. Winner Dylan van Baarle covered the 257.2 kilometers from Compiègne to Roubaix with an average speed of 45.792 km/h.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix), van Aert and Kasper Asgreen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) were also surprised by this wind edge situation after around 47 kilometers. After more than 100 kilometers of catching up, the second group managed to catch up with the peloton again.

Paris-Roubaix: debutant Pascal Ackermann has to give up very early

The race over the cobblestones was very disappointing for Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates). The 28-year-old had to give up the classic on his debut after around 20 kilometers and thus well before the first pavé sector.

Team colleague Felix Groß also had to leave the race early. After falling on the second cobblestone section, he was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm.

Groß’ crash wasn’t the only crash on this sunny Easter Sunday in northern France. The 119th edition was marked by numerous falls on the dusty pavés. In addition, there were always defects.
