The deep partial lunar eclipse will reach its peak on August 28 at 12:13 a.m. Eastern time, as documented by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio. At that exact moment, 96.3 percent of the lunar surface will sit firmly within the Earth’s umbra—the central, darkest part of our planet’s shadow.
This major viewing window spans across a broad swath of the globe. According to NASA, the spectacle is viewable across most of the Americas, western Europe, and western Africa. Analysts at Time and Date note that more than three billion people—representing upwards of 40 percent of the world’s population—will have the opportunity to witness at least some portion of the eclipse’s partial phase.
The Physics Behind the Red Glow
While the event falls slightly short of a total lunar eclipse and is not a true blood moon, the visual effect is driven by the exact same atmospheric mechanics that produce brilliant sunsets. As Earth moves squarely between the sun and the moon, it blocks most direct starlight. The remaining rays that filter through our atmosphere project all of the world’s sunrises and sunsets onto the lunar surface.
Nico Cappelluti, an astrophysicist at the University of Miami, explained to USA Today’s Julia Gomez that a small portion of the moon would continue to glow while the remainder remained in darkness.
During this alignment, yellow-to-red wavelengths of sunlight successfully pierce the Earth’s atmosphere and reach our eyes, while shorter bluer light scatters away. Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomer at the University of San Francisco, pointed out to KQED’s Ella Jackson that the exact reddish tone will be influenced by atmospheric sooty-ness,
which fluctuates based on cloud cover, air quality, fire smoke, and other regional environmental factors.
A Two-Hour Timeline for Skywatchers
The celestial show unfolds at a leisurely pace compared to its solar counterpart earlier in the month, which was visible only to a small slice of Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, and Spain. Lunar eclipses stretch across hours rather than minutes and demand no special viewing equipment.
The moon enters the partial eclipse phase roughly two hours before the midnight peak. Observers watching during this ramp-up will see progressively larger segments of the lunar orb tinted red. Following the maximum peak at 12:13 a.m. Eastern time, the moon will slowly emerge from Earth’s shadow over another two-hour period.
A Unique Perspective from Low Earth Orbit
The reach of this week’s event extends well beyond Earth’s surface. According to the Associated Press, astronauts aboard both the International Space Station (ISS) and China’s Tiangong space station may have the opportunity to witness the astronomical show.
