Austria is a neutral state, but that doesn’t mean that it should turn away from European solidarity. On the contrary, Austria actively participates in EU missions, UNO and NATO peacekeeping missions to promote security and stability in the world. An important aspect of this security is protection against missile attacks that know no borders. That is why Austria supports the Sky Shield project, which aims to ensure efficient air defense for Europe.
This project is not a threat to other states, but a defensive measure that has proven its worth in Ukraine and Israel. Austria alone could not afford such a system, so it makes sense to coordinate and cooperate with the partners. The FPÖ rejects the Sky Shield project, although they know that it is in Austria’s interest. It does so only out of oppositional spirit, ignoring the opinion of many soldiers and experts who recognize the need for modern air defenses. The head of the Luftwaffe has admitted that Austria has no weapons systems to shoot down drones or cruise missiles at long range. It is sad that the FPÖ is willing to sacrifice Austria’s security for their political ends.
