Passengers in stations will be monitored by a new SBB device – rts.ch

The railway company has been recording passenger flows with cameras for ten years. However, from September 2023, a more sophisticated system should be implemented in the major stations of Switzerland.

According to Ktipp, who obtained the tender, the cameras would detail the path taken through the station by each traveler. They would also detect his age, his luggage and his size, but especially the trajectories and the expenses made in the shops.

Increase spending?

The aim would be to increase passenger purchases in stores. Indeed, when the turnover of traders increases, the rent collected by the SBB also rises.

For their part, the SBB does not confirm the conclusions of KTipp and defends an improvement in customer service and safety in stations. The data would also not allow tracing back to individuals in order to remain in compliance with the law on the protection of the latter.
