In 1993, the bell tower of the Ste Gertrude church, located Place Van Meyel in Etterbeek, threatened to collapse. The whole church was then demolished. For 20 years, the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels had been working on a reconstruction project for a smaller, more modern building that aroused as much enthusiasm as fear on the part of the inhabitants of the district. On June 20, the Archdiocese however announced that in view of the increase in construction costs in recent months, and that other churches were located nearby, it was abandoning the project “with regret”. A reflection “aimed at developing a future project for this land that responds in particular to pastoral and societal issues” has been announced. To be continued…

In the meantime, a climbing room will be inaugurated this Friday in the church of Saint-Antoine de Padoue de Forest. Built by the private Maniak Padoue project, the climbing room which will occupy the naves of the church will be able to climb up to 22 meters and accommodate up to 150 climbers. The project intends to integrate into the life of the district. Note that part of the church will still be dedicated to Catholic worship.
