Pathogenic AI Confirmed at Yeoju Farm, Third Outbreak This Fall

An H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak at a layer farm in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, has triggered a sharp acceleration in South Korea’s national quarantine response, marking the third confirmed case at a domestic poultry farm this autumn.

Rapid Spread Prompting Emergency Response

The latest detection involves a flock of approximately 260,000 laying hens, according to the Asian Avian Influenza Central Accident Response Headquarters. Following the confirmation, authorities have moved swiftly to contain the virus, implementing mandatory depuration, movement restrictions, and epidemiological investigations.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs noted the gravity of the situation, pointing out that three separate farm outbreaks have been confirmed within four days of the season’s first detection on November 3 and 4. In addition to the farm cases, six detections have surfaced in wild birds, heightening concerns over environmental persistence and transmission.

To combat the spreading threat, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government convened an emergency quarantine inspection meeting on November 6, bringing together deputy heads from 18 cities and counties to coordinate regional containment protocols. Energy Economy reported that a 24-hour temporary standstill order took effect at midnight for chicken farms, livestock facilities, and transport vehicles across Gyeonggi, Gangwon, and Chungbuk.

Heightened Surveillance Across Poultry Infrastructure

Authorities have established a 10-kilometer management zone around the infected Yeoju facility, subjecting 38 nearby poultry farms to intensive precision testing. Each of these surrounding operations has been assigned a dedicated inspection officer tasked with strictly controlling vehicle and personnel access while overseeing continuous disinfection procedures.

Nationwide oversight has similarly tightened. The routine testing cycle for all domestic layer farms has been compressed from once every quarter to once every two weeks. Meanwhile, 14 dense layer farming complexes are now subject to weekly biosecurity checks and mandatory weekly mortality inspections for individual farms.

Movement controls are also expanding beyond standard facilities. Checkpoints are being established not only at large-scale layer farms housing more than 200,000 birds but also at breeding stock farms, grandparent stock operations, primary breeder duck farms, and high-density rearing complexes. Spent hens from layer and breeder operations are restricted exclusively to slaughterhouse delivery, with all transport to traditional markets or other rearing farms strictly prohibited.

Authorities Launch National Disinfection Week and Restrict Farm Access

As part of preemptive containment measures, the Central Accident Response Headquarters has designated the period through November 17 as a national all-out disinfection week, stepping up sanitation protocols along migratory bird habitats and farm access roads. In Gyeonggi and Chungnam provinces, vaccine injection teams are facing restricted farm access until 9 a.m. on November 14.

Agricultural officials have also ordered emergency inspections of egg transshipment sites across the country to be completed by November 16. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs emphasized that the early November surge indicates an alarmingly high rate of virus introduction from wild birds, urging all local governments and producer associations to enforce basic biosecurity rules without exception.
