Patrick Vieira Takes Charge of Senegal National Football Team After World Cup Exit
Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of the Senegal men’s national team, succeeding Pape Thiaw following the team’s elimination in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to regional and international sports reports.
The 50-year-old former France midfielder takes charge of a national team for the first time in his coaching career. Born in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, Vieira manages the country of his birth after moving to France at age eight, eventually earning over 100 caps for Les Bleus and lifting the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000. According to the BBC, Senegal’s football federation (FSF) stated that the appointment reflects its “desire to strengthen its high-level technical staff” and is “perfectly aligned” with the nation’s sporting ambitions.
Navigating New Horizons After European Club Stints
Vieira arrives in West Africa following a managerial career across England, France, and Italy. Most recently, he served as head coach of Serie A club Genoa, leaving the role by mutual consent in November 2025 with the team at the bottom of the league. During the 2024-25 season, he guided Genoa to safety and a 13th-place finish before departing after a difficult start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Before his time in Italy, Vieira managed New York City, Nice, Premier League club Crystal Palace, and RC Strasbourg in France. As a player, he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups at Arsenal, alongside silverware with AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Manchester City before retiring in 2011.
A Transitional Period for the Teranga Lions
Vieira succeeds Pape Thiaw, who led Senegal through a turbulent period that included a round-of-32 exit against Belgium at the 2026 World Cup in July, as reported by The Athletic. Thiaw had also managed the team during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Senegal won the final but later had their title stripped by the African football federation following a walk-off controversy involving a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco.

Senegal has lodged an appeal against that decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with a hearing scheduled for October 8. Meanwhile, Vieira is expected to begin his tenure next month, leading the Teranga Lions into their upcoming qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Looking Ahead to 2027 AFCON Qualifiers
Contract details and an official presentation date are still being finalized by the federation. Vieira inherits a squad with the immediate objective of securing qualification for the 2027 tournament.
