Paul Magnette: “Flemish people always have to work hard, Walloons prefer to enjoy life. Is it so bad?”

At the heart of the news, the president of the Socialist Party continues to be talked about after an interview with our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws.

advertised as one of the candidates for the post of Prime MinisterPaul Magnette does not unanimity, especially with the Flemish nationalists. They would only accept the idea if confederalism applied in Belgium. But for the Walloon, it is unthinkable. “Confederalism means the end of Belgium. If you split social security, you won’t have any countries left. So why does the N-VA still want to keep Belgium? Simple: because they want Brussels.”

Between the two party leaders, there are many ideological differences. But in their function of mayor of a big city, they are both brought to fight a scourge, Drugs. “I can blame him for a lot of things, but not his fight against drugs. Antwerp has a global port, which is crucial for the transit of drugs. We have to tackle this phenomenon nationally and internationally, and c is what we do,” he continued.

One of the most divisive subjects between the Flemish and the Walloons was also discussed during the interview: unemployment. How does Paul Magnette explain such a difference between the south and the north of the country? The socialist invokes the destruction of industry in the 1960s.

“Until the 1960s, the situation was reversed and poor Flanders benefited from Belgian solidarity. I have the impression that the Flemings sometimes want too much. I understand it in a way: for centuries there had poverty, and it’s apparently in the genes to work as hard as possible,” explains Magnette before confirming the shot: “Why wait so long before tasting happiness, ask many Walloons. Walloons prefer to enjoy life. Is it so bad?”
