Embroiled for more than a year in a resounding case of alleged blackmail, Paul Pogba spoke to Al-Jazeera about the consequences of fame and money in his life as a footballer. The 2018 world champion notably assures that he sometimes would like not to be rich.

At the end of August 2022, the 2018 world champion found himself, despite himself, plunged into the heart of a dark story of extortion attempts by an organized gang after the publication of a video by Mathias Pogba, in which the latter promises ” great revelations” about the Juventus Turin environment. In a complaint, Paul Pogba recounts having been trapped by childhood friends and held captive for an entire night in an apartment in Seine-et-Marne by two hooded and armed men, who allegedly ordered him to pay 13 millions of euros to buy his security and that of those around him.
“Money changes people. It can break up a family. It can create a war,” laments Paul Pogba speaking to Al-Jazeera. Sometimes I was alone and I said to myself: ‘I don’t want to have money anymore. ‘Money. I don’t want to play anymore. I just want to be with normal people, so they love me for me – not for the fame, not for the money’. Sometimes it’s hard.”
Confrontation with his alleged blackmailers scheduled for this Friday
Over the past year, six people close to Paul Pogba, including his older brother and a childhood friend, have been indicted for “attempted extortion and criminal conspiracy”. As revealed by RMC last week, Paul Pogba and his alleged blackmailers are summoned this Friday, September 15 to the investigating judges’ office, at the Paris judicial court. This is the first time that Paul Pogba will face his brother Mathias. The objective of these confrontations is to establish the precise role of each person.
