Paxlovid is a prime example of the advantage of dispensing medication in the office

COVID sufferers in particular would benefit from this service, ÖÄK Vice President Edgar Wutscher calls on health politicians to act quickly.

Vienna (OTS) – “Dispensing medication in the office always improves the service for patients – this is currently particularly clear for people suffering from COVID,” says Edgar Wutscher, Vice President of the Austrian Medical Association and Federal Curia Chairman of the resident doctors. Especially in the case of a newly diagnosed COVID disease, it is crucial that patients get their antiviral medication, such as Paxlovid, as quickly as possible, but at the same time avoid further chains of infection. It should therefore be possible to give painkillers, fever-reducing and possibly cough suppressants straight away in the office. “Why should a COVID-infected person have to drive around the area to get their medication instead of being able to concentrate on their recovery as quickly as possible?” asks Wutscher. There is no reasonable answer to this question. Wutscher is therefore calling on health politicians to act quickly: “The dispensing of medication in the office must finally be made possible – and of course the supply of Paxlovid must be secured. We resident doctors are happy to take care of our patients year in, year out and even between the holidays. Dispensing medication would significantly improve this service.”

Wutscher sees the increasing willingness to vaccinate among the population as positive, especially for influenza. “Both the patients who received the discounted vaccine and the resident doctors, who have once again proven how easily and reliably they can carry out nationwide vaccination campaigns, are the big winners of this year’s vaccination campaign,” says Wutscher . To increase the vaccination rate, all we need is more vaccine. “More awareness raising certainly doesn’t hurt, but what’s crucial is that the vaccines are then available,” said Wutscher about a corresponding suggestion from Health Minister Rauch.
