PDIP and PKS are the last hope to run the opposition machine – 2024-05-04 07:13:15

Senior researcher from the Political Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency, Prof. Lili Romli, said that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) were the last hopes to be in the opposition seats.

He emphasized that opposition strength in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) is still needed significantly so that there is control and supervision of the government. If there is no opposition, the policies that are introduced tend to be detrimental to the people, as in the New Order era.

“If everyone comes in, that’s greetings. The DPR really doesn’t play a role,” said Lili in a webinar, Monday (29/4).

He believes that currently the president-elect for the 2024 presidential election, Prabowo Subianto, wants to embrace all parties outside his supporting coalition, namely the NasDem Party, National Awakening Party (PKB), United Development Party (PPP), and PKS.

However, recently, Prabowo has only communicated directly with NasDem and PKB. Even so, he believes that PPP and PKS also want to be invited to join Prabowo’s coalition.

“What’s left is PDIP, now we know that PDIP also has two factions. There are those who want to remain in the opposition, and there are those who want to join,” he said.

He also said that there were a number of assumptions that DPR members would continue to play a supervisory function even though their party was in coalition with the government. However, he believes that supervision will not be as sharp as if the DPR member’s party runs in opposition.

For this reason, he said that democracy will survive if political figures and party leaders are committed to making democracy a state system in Indonesia. There should not be a single thought about returning to the authoritarianism of the past.

“I hope there will be a commitment from political parties and elites to make democracy the best form of government for Indonesia,” he said. (Ant/Z-11)
