Pedestrian fatally mown in Châtelet: the driver, born in 1991, charged and released under conditions

The driver who fatally mowed down a 50-year-old on Sunday evening rue des Sablières in Châtelet (province of Hainaut) was charged with manslaughter and hit and run, the Charleroi prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday afternoon. The driver was released on conditions.

The 53-year-old victim was crossing the road to return to her home on rue des Sablières in Châtelet, when she was fatally mowed down by a motorist who fled. The emergency services intervened on the spot and attempted resuscitation, in vain.

The suspect, on the run, was finally arrested a few hours after the incident. “He was arrested at his home, after contacting the police to report that he thought he had hit something.said the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office on Monday.

The motorist, born in 1991, underwent a breathalyzer which proved negative. The hearing before the investigating judge, which had been started and interrupted Monday afternoon to allow certain checks, resumed on Tuesday. “The driver, who admits the facts and explains that he panicked, was charged with manslaughter and hit and run and released on conditions. He evokes the accidental thesis“, reported the Charleroi prosecutor’s office on Tuesday afternoon.
