Pelé does not respond to chemo and goes to palliative care

At the beginning of the year it was determined that the cancer had metastasized to various organs.

Pelé’s state of health has worsened since he was admitted last Tuesday to the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paulo.

According to the Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, the former Santos no longer responds to the chemotherapy treatment he has been undergoing since September 2021 due to an operation for colon cancer.

In addition, at the beginning of the year he was diagnosed with metastases in the intestine, lung and liver.

Pelé, 82, is currently in palliative care, for which chemotherapy has been suspended and he is now receiving measures to try to alleviate the pain and shortness of breath. The medical staff does not want to subject the former soccer player to invasive therapies.

The hospice area is designed to help people with serious illnesses feel better by preventing or treating the symptoms and side effects of the illness or treatment they are receiving. The case of Pelé is a clear example and, for this reason, he is now in that area admitted.

At first, Pelé was scheduled to arrive at the hospital last Wednesday for his review of the chemotherapy therapy for the colon tumor, but his hospitalization was brought forward one day due to a state of anasarca, that is, a swelling in his body and due to a syndrome of edemigemia and heart failure, as reported by Espn.

The Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital released a note informing Pele’s state of health yesterday Friday.

“The response has been adequate and the patient (Pelé), who remains in the common room, is stable, with a general improvement in his health,” the hospital note said.

This was the last official version from the medical center and new information is expected in the next few hours.
