Sao Paulo (AFP) – Brazilian football legend Pele was discharged Thursday from hospital four days after being treated for colon cancer, according to the Sao Paulo Medical Center.
Albert Einstein Hospital said in a statement that Pele, 81, was “in good and stable clinical condition.”
Pele, 81, underwent surgery on the fourth of last September in the same hospital to remove a colon tumor discovered during routine examinations. He spent ten days in the intensive care unit, before returning briefly after a few days due to breathing difficulties.
Pele was admitted to the hospital again for two weeks last December for chemotherapy, and then in February, not only to continue his cancer treatment, but also because he developed a urinary tract infection, and he will visit the hospital repeatedly to continue his colon cancer treatment, according to his family.
The legendary player’s health has been fragile in recent years, with many hospitalizations.
Pele suffered from several health problems, especially during 2019, when he was admitted to hospital in Paris, before being transferred to Sao Paulo due to kidney stones.
Pele, the only player in history to win the World Cup three times (1958, 1962 and 1970), scored 77 goals in 92 matches for the Seleção shirt before retiring in 1977.
He was chosen in 1999 by the International Olympic Committee, as one of the best athletes of the twentieth century, and a year later as the best player of the same century by the International Football Association (FIFA).
