Elections in Slovakia

Who will be the next President of Slovakia will be decided in the second round of voting.

In the first round on Saturday, former foreign minister and declared enemy of Hungary Ivan Korcok surprisingly prevailed against Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini, whose Hlas-SD is part of the government coalition. However, the lead is only five and a half points, while Stefan Harabin, another candidate from the Fico government, ended up in third place. According to preliminary information, 42.5% voted for Korcok, Pellegrini got 37.0%, and Harabin was eliminated with 11.7%. As a representative of the Hungarian minority, Krisztián Forró came in 4th place with almost 3% of the vote and with this result was able to outperform five other candidates, including the former Prime Minister Igor Matovic.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó praised the success of Forró, who was even able to take first place in the Hungarian-populated electoral districts of Dunaszerdahely and Komárom. The Orbán government is undoubtedly keeping its fingers crossed for Peter Pellegrini in the fight against Ivan Korcok, who in the recent past allowed himself the worst attacks against Budapest and advocated intensive support for his neighbor in the Ukraine war. After election day, Pellegrini emphasized that the majority of citizens want a president who stands up for national interests and peace in Ukraine.
