Since the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine started a year ago, the discussion in Austria has flared up again and again – that of neutrality. A non-partisan alliance of former politicians, experts and entrepreneurs is currently questioning neutrality in an open letter, including EU MP Othmar Karas (ÖVP) and ex-FPÖ Defense Minister Herbert Scheibner. They call for “a serious debate” and the adoption of a new security doctrine: “Peaceful foreign policy is no guarantee of security,” they say.
