Perth Forest Fire Threatens City: Urgent Evacuation Advised as Blaze Intensifies

A major forest fire threatened the Australian city of Perth, whose population is around two million, on Sunday. They are advised to evacuate their homes because the blaze is “intensifying”.

The fire broke out on Saturday and has already engulfed some 2,600 hectares of nature. More than 240 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames, which were however out of control. The fire is also spreading in several directions. About seventy kilometers northeast of Perth, a house has already been destroyed, according to local media.

The high temperatures (40.7°C measured on Sunday in Perth according to the Australian news agency AAP) also complicate extinction efforts.

Authorities had previously warned that Australia’s spring and summer were likely to be the biggest fire season since the “black” summer of 2019-2020. Twelve million hectares of forest then went up in smoke.
