Peru Congress: Candidates Emerge After President’s Removal

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

LIMA – Peru’s Congress is navigating a period of intense political maneuvering following the censure of interim President José Jerí Oré on Tuesday. The vote, with 75 in favor, 24 against, and 3 abstentions, immediately removed Jerí from office and triggered a swift process to select a replacement who will assume the presidency of the republic. The political landscape remains fluid as several candidates have stepped forward to vie for the position of Congressional President, a role that now carries the weight of the nation’s highest office.

The rapid succession of events underscores the ongoing political instability in Peru, which has seen a revolving door of presidents in recent years. Jerí’s censure stemmed from allegations surrounding undisclosed meetings with a Chinese businessman and late-night activity at the Government Palace, raising questions about transparency and potential conflicts of interest. With general elections scheduled for April, the selection of a new interim president will be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining public trust.

The process of nominating candidates was initiated immediately after the censure vote, with a deadline of 6:00 p.m. On Tuesday for submissions. As of Wednesday, February 18th, four candidates have officially registered their bids for the Congressional presidency, setting the stage for a vote scheduled for 6:00 p.m. On Wednesday, February 18th, according to reporting from Andina.

Candidates for Congressional Presidency

María del Carmen Alva Prieto, representing the Acción Popular party, was the first to formally submit her candidacy. Her nomination was supported by fellow party member Edwin Martínez Talavera, who serves as the spokesperson for the group. Alva Prieto is not new to the role, having previously served as President of Congress during the 2021-2022 legislative period.

The Honor and Democracy bloc has put forward Segundo Héctor Acuña Peralta, a representative from the La Libertad region and the brother of political leader César Acuña. His candidacy is backed by Congressman Jorge Montoya Manrique, the spokesperson for the Honor and Democracy parliamentary group.

Adding to the competition, the Bloque Democrático Popular, a left-leaning bloc, has officially nominated Edgard Reymundo Mercado. The nomination was presented by Congresswoman Ruth Luque, the spokesperson for the group.

Finally, Perú Libre has registered José María Balcázar Celada as a candidate, with the support of Flavio Cruz Mamani, the spokesperson for the party.

The candidates registered with the Officialía Mayor in the following order:

  1. Segundo Héctor Acuña Peralta – Honor and Democracy (04:37pm)
  2. María del Carmen Alva Prieto – Acción Popular (04:49pm)
  3. Édgard Cornelio Reymundo Mercado – Bloque Democrático Popular (05:13pm)
  4. José María Balcazar Zelada – Perú Libre (05:23pm)
