Peru: Former President Kuczynski says he suffers from the same ailment that led to the pardon of Alberto Fujimori | International

The humanitarian pardon that Kuczynski granted to Fujimori was annulled due to irregularities in 2018, among which the convicted ex-president’s medical report was questioned, but above all due to the accusations made by then-legislator Moisés Mamani that Kenji Fujimori, in his capacity as parliamentarian , offered him political favors in exchange for voting against impeachment.

The ex-president Peter Paul Kuczynski warned this Wednesday that he suffers from the same heart condition, ventricular fibrillation, that the former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) and that was the reason in 2017 to grant a humanitarian pardon to his predecessor.

This was stated by Kuczynski during the trial against former congressman Kenji Fujimori, son of Alberto Fujimori. This, due to the alleged irregular negotiations to obtain that benefit for his father.

“If the fibrillation gets out of control, it can lead to death, (because) I suffer from ventricular fibrillation myself. That’s why they put me a pacemaker two years ago. So yes, it’s dangerous.” commented.

The former president, under house arrest for three years for another case of alleged corruption, responded to the magistrates and lawyers of the accused. He denied recalling the text of the report that called for a humanitarian pardon for Fujimori.

In any case, he acknowledged knowing the ailment suffered by the former president, convicted of the massacres of Barrios Altos (1991) and the cantuta (1992).

Kuczynski recalled that at the beginning of 2017 he received the then congressman at the Government Palace Kenji Fujimori to deliver aid to the victims of the El Niño phenomenon.

Kenji expresses wish of the Kuczynski family

In that meeting, Kenji told him that “He and his family hoped that one day his father would be able to receive a humanitarian pardon,” as recalled by the former president.

He explained that “there was no agreement (to grant the pardon) because in the campaign” previous election had already announced that it seemed to him that, “For humanitarian reasons, Mr. Fujimori and other inmates should be able to serve their sentence at home.”

In that sense, he added that the Executive he headed “to work on it since mid-2017”, given that Fujimori’s pardon was announced on December 24 of that year.

However, when asked about the route that the pardon followed in the Executive, Kuczynski said that he could not “answer accurately” Although he explained that this “it goes through the minister of the branch”.

“I think the minister (from Justice, Henry) Mendoza has had to check with me” his approval, he explained.

Likewise, it responded that there was no other factor to grant Fujimori a pardon in 2017, except the doctor, and He also denied that he made that decision as a result of a political negotiation to avoid his dismissal, as proposed by Congress at the time.

However, the Constitutional Court (TC) restored it last Thursday.

Kenji Fujimori and former legislators Welcome Ramirez and William Bocangel They are currently being prosecuted for the alleged crimes of bribery and influence peddling with a request for 12 years in prison.

This, as a result of the denunciations of Mamani, who was part of the Popular Force bench, a party led by Keiko Fujimori.

Former minister denies favors

The former minister of ProductionBruno Giuffra also responded during the hearing that he met the legislators during his term in the Executive, but stressed that I had never received any request from them personally or verbally.

“The projects are approved in the evaluation process, there is no such thing as the minister approving or disapproving a project. Personally, I have not approved any investment project”, Giuffra pointed out.
